Non-Linear Junction Detectors (NLJD)

Non-linear junction detectors (NLJDs) are among the most powerful tools available for professional counter-surveillance sweeps and TSCM (Technical Surveillance Countermeasures) operations.

Unlike traditional RF detectors, an NLJD can locate hidden electronic devices, even when they are switched off, shielded, or not transmitting by detecting the semiconductor junctions inside them.

The EDD-24T from JJN Digital is the most accessible professional NLJD in our range. Compact, CE-certified and made in the UK, it transmits a focused directional signal at 2.4 GHz and receives on 4.8 GHz (second harmonic) and 7.2 GHz (third harmonic). It detects mobile phones, covert cameras, listening devices, GPS trackers, SIM cards and any other semiconductor-based device whether active, passive or switched off.

All NLJDs in our range ship with free DHL Express worldwide delivery, and orders placed before 13:00 CET are dispatched the same day.

For most first-time buyers, we recommend starting with the EDD-24T that is the most accessible professional model in our range. For sweeps that need extended reach into ceilings or wall cavities, the SWORD-24s is the better fit.

New 2026. addition to our portofolio: Eskan Lica 4 offers both automatic and manual modes, allowing you to adapt sensitivity and detection behavior depending on the environment in which it is used.

What Does NLJD Stand For?

NLJD stands for Non-Linear Junction Detector. As an EU distributor working directly with manufacturers including JJN Digital, Acustek and Eskan, Beling d.o.o. supplies non-linear junction detectors to law enforcement, government agencies, TSCM contractors and corporate security teams across Europe, the UK and worldwide.Because NLJDs identify TSCM equipment and bug sweeping equipment purely by semiconductor signature rather than radio transmission, they remain the only reliable method for finding a device that is switched off, battery-dead, or has no wireless connection at all - something no RF detector or spectrum analyzer can do.

What Can a Non-Linear Junction Detector Find?

NLJDs are specifically designed to detect concealed electronics in walls, furniture, objects, and on persons, including:

  • Hidden listening devices and audio bugs
  • Covert cameras and video surveillance equipment
  • Mobile phones and GSM transmitters
  • Tracking devices and GPS loggers
  • USB sticks, memory cards and nano SIM cards
  • Any device containing a semiconductor, regardless of whether it is active, passive or powered off

Choosing the Right NLJD for Your Operation

Our range covers a variety of operational needs, environments and budget levels. Here is how the models compare:

Extended-reach NLJDs for hard-to-access areas - The EDD-24XT builds directly on the EDD-24T with an adjustable aluminium extension pole that reaches from 30 cm to 140 cm, enabling sweeps of high ceilings, wall cavities, under floors and other hard-to-reach locations. The adjustable head offers five positions over a 90-degree angle. Two 200g counterweights improve balance during extended use. At under 870g including the pole, it remains fully portable with the same 4.5-hour battery life and military-standard carry case.

AI-assisted dual-frequency NLJD - The SWORD-24s is a lightweight handheld NLJD weighing just 0.5 kg with a built-in AI algorithm that actively minimises false positives. Operating at dual frequencies (2.404–2.472 GHz primary, 4.808–4.944 GHz and 7.212–7.416 GHz harmonics), it can detect eavesdropping bugs, hidden cameras, phones, USB sticks, memory cards, SIM cards and passive GSM bugs through brick, wood, plastic, fabric and other non-metal materials. An extendable rod from 80 cm to 136 cm adds reach, and a battery-saving auto-shutdown activates when the device is folded and stationary. Suitable for corporate security sweeps, government security operations and private investigations.

Professional handheld NLJD for intensive TSCM work - The Eskan Lica 4 is a professional-grade handheld NLJD designed for intensive counter-surveillance and TSCM sweep operations. Built for security professionals and government-level operators who require a reliable, high-sensitivity detection instrument for frequent field deployment.

Lornet models -Handheld models such as the Lornet Classic are ideal for close-range sweeps of rooms, vehicles, and personal items, offering portability without compromising detection capability. Compact models like the Lornet 24 deliver fast, discreet sweeps in confined spaces where manoeuvrability is key. High-power models such as the Lornet 36 and Lornet 36 Mini are designed for deeper penetration through walls, floors, and dense materials, making them the preferred choice for securing conference rooms, offices, and sensitive facilities. Dual-frequency models like the 0836 offer double-probing frequency detection, providing a higher level of accuracy and reducing the risk of false positives.

How Does a Non-Linear Junction Detector Work?

All NLJDs operate on the same core principle. They transmit a high-frequency radio signal and then analyse the harmonic response when that signal encounters a target material. Silicon that is used in all modern semiconductor electronics, produces a strong second harmonic frequency. Bi-metals and oxidised metals respond with a third harmonic. By measuring and comparing both responses, an NLJD can reliably distinguish between genuine electronic devices and natural metallic materials, significantly reducing false positives. This makes NLJDs uniquely effective in locating hidden surveillance devices that RF detectors cannot find because the target is not transmitting any signal at all.

Who Uses NLJDs?

Non-linear junction detectors are used by law enforcement agencies, government security teams, military units, TSCM professionals, corporate security managers, private investigators, and hotel or facility managers conducting room security checks across Europe, the UK and worldwide.

For a complete counter-surveillance sweep protocol, NLJDs are typically used alongside RF detectors and spectrum analyzers.

Non-Linear Junction Detector vs RF Detector: Which Do You Need?

An RF detector only finds devices that are actively transmitting a signal at the moment of the sweep. An NLJD finds a hidden device whether it is transmitting or not, because it is reacting to the semiconductor itself rather than to radio activity. For this reason, most professional TSCM sweeps run both: the RF detector or spectrum analyzer catches anything currently broadcasting, while the NLJD catches anything switched off, battery-dead, or built with no wireless capability at all — including devices with no signal to detect in the first place.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you identify a hidden electronic device with an NLJD?
You sweep the target area with the NLJD's antenna. The device transmits a signal into the surface, and if a semiconductor junction is present, it reflects a harmonic response the NLJD's receiver picks up and displays as a signal strength reading, independent of whether the hidden device is powered on.

Can an NLJD find a phone that is turned off?
Yes. Because detection relies on the semiconductor junction rather than an active radio signal, an NLJD will find a mobile phone, SIM card or other electronic device even when it is fully powered off.

Which NLJD should I choose?
The EDD-24T is our most accessible professional model and a solid default for most operations. Choose the EDD-24XT for high ceilings and hard-to-reach cavities, the SWORD-24s for AI-assisted dual-frequency sweeps, or a Lornet model for high-power, deep-penetration TSCM work.
