RF Detector: Everything the WAM-X25 Can Find

Before Your First Sweep with WAMX25: Setup That Actually Matters

Skip any one of these four steps and the unit still turns on and still shows data. It just will not be data you can trust.

Connect antennas to the correct port. The two black hinged omnidirectional antennas screw onto ANT WIDE and ANT CELL (gold connectors, top of unit), finger-tight, clockwise. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth use a built-in antenna on the left side of the unit, so nothing external is needed for those two modes. The blue LPA-14-SMA directional antenna stays off during general scanning. It only goes on when you're actively running Direction Find, on the port matching the band you're isolating (ANT WIDE for a wideband signal, ANT CELL for a cellular or 2.4/5GHz signal).

Set your region before anything else. SETTINGS → Location. The WAM-X25 shows up to 10 viewable cellular bands depending on which of the covered regions you select (UK, Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Australia). Skip it, and you will miss entire local cellular bands on every scan you run.

Set time and date before the first sweep. SETTINGS → Time & Date, DD/MM/YY and 24-hour format. Every logged event is timestamped against this. If you're delivering a sweep report to a client or an internal security team, an accurate timestamp is part of what makes that log usable as documentation.

Charge with the unit powered off. The internal Lithium-Polymer battery charges faster with the unit off, so the red LED is on while charging, green when complete, roughly 4 hours from empty. Use only the supplied 5V Micro USB charger; the unit's warranty doesn't cover damage from third-party chargers.

Reading the Screen Like an Operator

Most new owners skip past this part to get to the buttons. It's actually the part that determines whether you catch anything. The 13-channel layout: The main screen runs 13 channels simultaneously: 1 Wideband (0–14GHz), up to 10 cellular bands (the exact number depends on your region setting), and 2 dedicated Wi-Fi/Bluetooth channels (2.4GHz and 5GHz). Each has its own vertical 20-element bar graph, and more bars lit means a stronger signal, which is your first and fastest clue when you're trying to close in on a source. Livescan is the trace most buyers ignore. Along the bottom of the main/split screen, a blue trace sweeps roughly every 1 to 2 seconds, plotting the amplitude of whatever the Wideband channel is picking up. Nothing else on the display tells you more, because the shape of the trace identifies what kind of device you're dealing with before you've done anything else:

Smooth, flat, no gaps
An analogue constant-carrier signal (older bugging devices, some video transmitters).

Small regular gaps
A pulsing digital signal, which is normal for most modern digital transmissions.

Large, irregular gaps
A burst-type device, the classic signature of a GPS/asset tracker that transmits in short intervals to save power.

Split screen: Press MAIN-SPLIT to divide the display: live signals on the left, the event log on the right, both updating in real time. It's useful the moment you want to leave the unit running in a room and check back periodically, rather than staring at one view the whole time.

Mode by Mode: What Each Function Actually Finds

Wideband + worldwide cellular detection: This is the core of the device: a true 0–14GHz sweep (frequency of the detected signal shown up to 6GHz) running alongside region-matched 2G/3G/4G/5G cellular bands. In practice, this is what catches hidden phones used as bugs, GSM-based listening devices, and GPS or vehicle trackers riding on cellular networks. The wideband sweep alone also catches everything living outside that spectrum entirely: analogue bugs, proprietary RF, and non-cellular video transmitters.

Wi-Fi Network Analyser: Press WIFI to start compiling a live list of every Wi-Fi Access Point and Client in range: MAC address, manufacturer (where available), AP or Client type, SSID (where broadcast), band, and packet count. The six keys at the bottom let you clear the list, filter to Access Points only, filter to all devices, filter to Clients only (phones, laptops, printers), and sort by time, packet count, or signal strength. What you're actually looking for is an access point with no broadcast SSID, no recognisable manufacturer match, and no obvious business reason to be there. That combination, especially at strong signal strength close to a meeting room or executive office, is the profile of a covert Wi-Fi camera or access point set up specifically to exfiltrate data or stream video, rather than a legitimate network the building's IT team already knows about.

Bluetooth Device Analyser: Press BLUETOOTH to list nearby devices with MAC address, manufacturer, signal strength in dBm, and packet count. The important operational detail the spec sheet won't tell you plainly is that this analyser catches modern Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) devices such as smartphones, tablets, BLE earphones, and fitness trackers, but it may miss older generation Bluetooth Classic devices entirely. If you're sweeping for an older covert audio device built on Classic Bluetooth, this mode alone won't confirm its absence, so make sure to cross-check with the Wideband and cellular channels, which aren't affected by that limitation.

Direction Find: Connect the LPA-14 directional antenna to whichever port matches the band you want to isolate. Press DIRECTION FIND, wait for the on-screen calibration prompt, then select the band from the list with UP/DOWN.

Hold the unit flat and stable in both hands, because the calibration reads as unreliable if you're moving while it initialises.

Rotate slowly: one full 360° turn should take 10 seconds or longer. The slower the rotation, the more signal data is gathered per degree, and the more accurate your bearing.

Do more than one rotation. Each additional pass adds resolution to the plot.

Read the plot by colour and length: green near the centre means a weak reading at that bearing, shifting through yellow and orange to red at the outer edge for the strongest bearings. The longest, reddest line is your direction to the source.

The RESET ROTATION key clears the plot if you need to start over, which is useful if you moved position mid-rotation.

Live Graph vs Log Graph: Live Graph plots all detected events per band over a rolling 12 minutes in real time. Use it while you're on site and want to watch activity build as it happens. Log Graph gives you a 60-minute history window you can scroll through with LEFT/RIGHT. Use it after you've left the unit monitoring a room unattended, to review what happened while you were away. One note from the manufacturer: if nothing was detected in a given 60-minute window, no Log Graph is stored for that period, so don't read a missing graph as a fault.

Field Technique: What Separates a Professional Sweep

Sensitivity: Five sensitivity levels are available via the SENSITIVITY button (UP/DOWN to adjust; the setting briefly flashes red on screen when changed). Keep in mind that at sensitivity level 4 or 5, in proximity to a strong signal, co-channel interference can cause that signal to also appear on an adjacent band or harmonic. In practice, start at a lower level, confirm what you're seeing, and only push sensitivity up when you're deliberately trying to extend range. It should never be your default setting.

Trim the noise with Band Selection. SETTINGS → Select Bands lets you switch off bands you have no reason to monitor in a given sweep (a rarely-used regional band, for example). Deselected bands show 'OFF' beneath their bar on the main screen. Fewer irrelevant bands logging means a cleaner event log and fewer false leads to chase later.

The audio 'tap test' confirms a live microphone. Press VOLUME to enable audio demodulation of anything detected on the Wideband channel, through the internal speaker or earphones. Digital signals often come through as clicks or buzzing; some analogue bugging devices demodulate as recognisable audio. Speak close to the suspect device, or tap its enclosure. If you hear your own voice or the tap through the WAM-X25's audio output, that confirms the device contains a live microphone.

Beep and Vibrate is monitoring without watching the screen. BEEP toggles an audible tone whose rate increases with detected signal strength, letting you track a source without staring at the display. In situations where you can't risk being seen checking a screen, switch to Vibrate mode instead (SETTINGS → Vibrate) for the same feedback, silently.

Log discipline: The event log holds a maximum of 10,000 events (numbered 0000–9999). The unit warns you when it's full but keeps monitoring live activity regardless. Treat a full log as something to act on immediately, not something to leave for later. Download to the supplied USB stick (enter the relevant screen → insert USB → wait for the 'USB DOWNLOAD, DO NOT DISCONNECT!' message to clear) before you erase, especially if the log is destined for a client report or any kind of documentation trail. Use a USB stick with nothing else stored on it, and never connect anything other than a USB stick to that socket, because the port is for storage transfer only.

What a Professional Sweep Actually Looks Like

Scenario 1
Pre-board-meeting sweep

Setup: a corporate security team has 20 minutes before a confidential board session starts.

  • With region and time already set from prior use, power on, connect both omni antennas, and run Wideband plus cellular for a baseline pass around the room perimeter.
  • Switch to WIFI mode, filter Access Points only, and check for any AP with no SSID and no manufacturer match near the table.
  • Run BLUETOOTH mode to catch any BLE recording device or tracker left under furniture.
  • If Livescan shows a burst-pattern trace anywhere in the room, switch to Direction Find on that band immediately, connect the directional antenna, and localise it before the room fills.
  • Leave the unit in Split Screen on a side table through the meeting for a live log, then review the Log Graph afterward for anything that appeared once attendees arrived.
Scenario 2
Travel or hotel suite sweep

Setup: a travelling executive's advance security detail sweeps a hotel suite before check-in.

  • Power on with region set to the country you're in. This matters more when travelling than in a fixed office, since cellular bands differ by country.
  • Run a Wideband and cellular sweep of each room, paying attention to Livescan trace behaviour near smoke detectors, lamps, and USB charging ports, which are common concealment points for constant-carrier analogue bugs.
  • Run the Wi-Fi Network Analyser. Hotel Wi-Fi environments are dense, so filter to Access Points only first, then cross-check any unfamiliar AP against the hotel's own listed network name.
  • Use Direction Find on any signal that doesn't match a known hotel system, holding the unit flat and rotating slowly given the confined space.
  • Download the log to USB before leaving the room as a dated record that the sweep took place.
Scenario 3
Vehicle GPS or asset tracker check

Setup: checking a company or personal vehicle for an unauthorised tracking device.

  • Power on inside the vehicle with the cellular channel active. GPS and asset trackers riding on cellular networks are exactly what worldwide cellular band detection is built to catch.
  • Watch the Livescan trace specifically for large, irregular gaps, the burst-transmission signature of a tracker sending short bursts to conserve battery.
  • If a burst pattern appears, switch to Direction Find with the antenna on ANT CELL, and move slowly around the vehicle's exterior and undercarriage access points to localise it.
  • Log the event with timestamp and signal strength before removing anything, in case the finding needs to be reported or handed to authorities.
Scenario 4
Recurring client sweep for security agency or PI use

Setup: a security agency delivers scheduled weekly sweeps to a corporate client and needs to hand over a documented result each time.

  • Set time and date, and region, once per device rather than per visit. This is what keeps every week's log internally consistent for comparison.
  • Run the same band selection each week (SETTINGS → Select Bands) so results are apples-to-apples across visits.
  • Use Split Screen throughout the sweep so live detection and log building happen together.
  • Download each week's log to a dedicated USB stick before erasing, building a dated archive that becomes the actual deliverable to the client. This is where the 10,000-event log and USB export earn their keep over a device with a smaller log.

Maintenance and Care

  • Use only the supplied 5V Micro USB charger and cable. Third-party chargers are not covered under warranty.
  • Operating range is -15°C to +50°C at under 90% relative humidity. Outside that range, treat readings as unverified until the unit returns to spec temperature.
  • Store the unit in the supplied military-standard carry case between sweeps; the machined aluminium enclosure is durable, but the case is what protects the antennas and accessories in transit.
  • Charge with the unit powered off for a faster full charge (roughly 4 hours).
